The Winthrop Harbormaster's Department oversees miles of coastline, including waters in East Boston as well as the water surrounding Deer Island. The Harbormaster handles all permits for vessels in town waters. Harbormaster's duties also include the safety and security of Winthrop's waterways. Specific objectives are to maintain a physical presence by patrolling harbor and waterfront areas and operating the state-funded Pump-Out boat. The Winthrop Harbormaster's Department works to keep Winthrop Harbor safe, by enforcing local and state boating laws and safety regulations, as well as coordinating and assisting in first aid, water rescue, and emergency evacuations. Members of the Harbormaster Department come from a variety of occupational backgrounds including police officers, firefighters, deputy sheriffs, engineers and marine captains, to name a few. The Harbormaster's Department also inspects private mooring systems to ensure issuance of and compliance with terms of town mooring decals. Community Information
